I visited my aunt, a true maximalist with a deep love for all things handmade. Even her soft pink and white handkerchief was hand-embroidered. She carried an old-world charm, yet there was something undeniably progressive about her. That day, she showed me a pair of jhumkas she had crafted from two different states of India when she was young-chitai work from one state, mirror work from another, woven together into a kaanchain jhumka. It held her essence, her spirit.
